Western Medical Acupuncture is a modern gentle form of acupuncture therapy used to alleviate pain, muscle knots (trigger points), and reduce tension. Medical Acupuncture is a very safe and effective way of addressing tension and muscles aches and can be used either as its own therapy or an excellent addition to other forms of manual therapy such as osteopathy. The British Medical Acupuncture Society suggests that acupuncture is effective in a range of painful conditions and is commonly used for short-term pain relief of chronic low back pain, neck pain, and knee pain from osteoarthritis. There is also evidence that Medical Acupuncture can be used for short-term pain relief of tension headaches, migraines, and jaw pain.
What is involved in having Medical Acupuncture?
Every patient will have an initial assessment by an osteopath who is certified in the use of Medical Acupuncture. Your osteopath will discuss with you whether Medical Acupuncture is appropriate for your condition and your individual needs. We may also suggest additional treatment using osteopathy or other therapies that will complement your acupuncture treatment.
The treatment may include a few consecutive appointments depending on your condition and response to therapy. This involves fine needles being inserted and briefly left in position until a response is noted. The number of needles varies but may only be two or three. Our treatments are very individualized thus your treatment may involve a different number of points in the body.
If you have any questions regarding Medical Acupuncture or are unsure whether acupuncture is the right therapy for you and your specific condition, please contact us for a free telephone consultation with our osteopaths who will be happy to advise you and answer any questions you may have.
